artEMBRACE - FunCo
artEMBRACE - FunCo is a unique and powerful After School Creative Arts Enrichment Program. It is based in YMCA Fun Company and began in February, 2007 at eleven sites. The Program focuses on developing Self-Esteem and Creativity in our youth, using art as the main conduit.
Our first year was so popular and successful that the Program has now undergone an over 800% expansion to now include 90 Fun Company sites in 5 Middle Tennessee counties during the 2007–2008 school year.
How Does artEMBRACE - FunCo Work?
Twice per week, Teaching Artists conduct one-hour Arts Workshops during afternoon Fun Company hours. Workshop Series range from three to eight weeks in duration. Each participating Fun Company site receives one Workshop Series either during Fall or Spring semester. Students are chosen via a ‘first-come, first served’ permission slip system, though preference is given to those who have not yet experienced artEMBRACE. A maximum of 15 students is allowed into each Workshop. Each year, a new Arts Discipline will be introduced to each site.

For Blues Harmonica Workshops, we partner with American Roots Music Education, an organization dedicated to advancing the awareness and appreciation of American Blues and Roots Music, its history, and culture by providing educational opportunities for young adults to learn about this unique music.
In addition, our new partnership with The Frist Museum Educational Community Outreach Program will provide classes in Art History for two Fun Company sites, as well as paid bussing for the students to view, discuss, and critique the upcoming Aaron Douglas Exhibit at the Frist Center this Winter.
We also partner with the Nashville Public Library Puppet Theatre Program which brings a variety of performances and learning into Fun Company sites.
In order to accommodate Program growth, Teaching Artists year-round interviews occur.
What's New for this Year?
- artEMBRACE has just been recognized by the YMCA of the USA and the Gibson Foundation as one of the leading arts-friendly Y programs in the United States. As a result, we have received a gift of 10 free brand new Gibson guitars as well as a $4,000.00 monetary grant from the Gibson Foundation. The grant is used for two purposes:
- To jump-start the artEMBRACE Fun Company Guitar Program;
- To help create the Guitar Program based in the upcoming artEMBRACE Neighborhood Creative Arts Center located in East Nashville.
- artEMBRACE recently expanded its services to include Corporate Training and In-Service Workshops. The first session, featuring African-Latin Percussion Teaching Artist Billy Ramirez, received great reviews from Vanderbilt University. If someone you know desires something a little different to liven up that booooooring upcoming corporate get-together, just contact Gerry Walker @ gwalker@ymcamidtn.org. He’s sure to have an Artist who’ll suit their needs.
YMCA artEMBRACE Advisory Board
The YMCA artEMBRACE Advisory Board consists of Arts professionals, educators, and concerned community citizens. The Board meets every two months to brainstorm issues and ideas for the Program. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Board, please contact Gerry Walker.
